How the meter adds up

Bangkok meters start at 35 THB, then charge about 6.50 THB per km to 10 km, 7 THB from 10 to 20 km and 8 THB from 20 to 40 km. Each minute under 6 km/h adds 3 THB.

Worked example: about 25 km to Nana or Asok
ItemTHB
Meter (35 start + distance bands)about 205
Slow-traffic minutes0 late at night; often 50–150+ at rush hour
Airport surcharge50
Expressway tolls, if usedabout 70–100
Typical totalabout 325–355 late at night with tolls; more in traffic

Skipping the expressway saves the toll but usually costs more in traffic minutes at busy times. At night the expressway is the faster and only slightly dearer choice.

Grab and Bolt at Don Mueang

Since 1 March 2026 Don Mueang keeps taxis, Grab and other ride services at separate pick-up points, and stops unbooked cars from waiting inside the airport. Book after you have your bags, then follow the pick-up pin and directions in the app; signs on Level 1 point to the ride-hailing area. Terminal 1 is international, Terminal 2 domestic, so set the right terminal in the app.

The app price is fixed before you ride. It is often close to the meter at night and can beat it at rush hour, when the meter adds traffic minutes.

Landing after midnight

The Red Line and MRT stop around midnight, so after that it is the taxi queue, an app, or the A1 and A2 buses if they are still running; check their last times at the stop. Night is when the meter is cheapest: light traffic keeps the total close to the worked example above.

Stay nearby

Nana, Asok and Phrom Phong are the usual nightlife bases on this route. Have the hotel name in Thai for the driver.

Scams to avoid

  • Anyone offering a car inside the arrivals hall or the car park. Take a queue slip at the official public-taxi stand (Terminal 1 ground floor near Gate 8; Terminal 2 near Gate 15).
  • A driver who will not switch the meter on. Ask for the next cab. Flat fares well above the band above are the tell.
  • Paying a toll twice. You hand the cash at the booth; it is not added again at the hotel.
  • This page is Don Mueang only. Suvarnabhumi uses a different road and a different total: Suvarnabhumi to Sukhumvit.
